  • Locating people online is not as easy as you might think. There are various methods to use and all of them take a little patience and plenty of surfing. Using the methods below you can locate email addresses, web pages, phone numbers, and home addresses of long lost friends and classmates. Keep in mind that the internet is a global medium so there are usually many people with your same name. Any additional information about the person you are trying to find that you can provide will make the search easier. But be careful, if you narrow the search too much, you may not find anyone!

For more detailed information read the FAQ on finding people.

There are many online data bases that have millions of names. Many of the names have been included automatically from other data bases such as America Online or Compuserve. You should first make sure that your name shows up in these data bases first. If your name is there, you may want to add additional information about yourself. Each of the services have different types of information that they track. Register your name with as many as you can to improve the chances that you can be found. The following are the ones are the most popular.

If the name you are looking for has a more unusual last name, try searching for just the last name. You may find that a siblings name or parents name is listed.

You can also try People Finder, (caution its a slow site). This site allows you to post information about who/what you're looking for. For example, I posted the notice about the reunion there.

Once you have found some email addresses you may have to do a little guessing. If you have narrowed the search to under ten names you can try the "Brute Force" method. Send an email to all of the addresses you found with a very brief message such as:

Because there is so much junk mail (SPAM) you may want to put something catchy in the subject line such as:

"Do you know so and so"

Most people don't mind these types of email. Unfortunately, just because you don't get a response, it doesn't mean that that isn't the person you are looking for. Many people do not regularly read their email. Also, because of the hundreds of SPAM messages people receive, sometimes their mailbox overflows and starts to drop older messages.

Another way you may find someone is to find their Home Page. Use the popular search engines to search for their fuill name. You should put the name in quotes to limit the search. Also try reversing the names Last, First. Sometimes this finds a name in a company database. I have had the most success with Infoseek and Yahoo!
These sites may have relevant information regarding locating alumni. If you know of any other sites that may help send me email.
